Short Duration Training
During the pan-European project “ECOWILL” (with Allegium’s executive director in leading role), an effective short duration training on fuel-efficient driving has been developed and evaluated. In contrast to Eco-Driving trainings of several hours or even a full day´s duration, the „Short Duration Training“ is focused only on the most relevant Eco-Driving principles. It is made for passenger cars up to 3.5 t GVM addressing high or low mileage drivers, novice or experienced, private or business drivers. The Allegium Short Duration Training is operated by highly experienced and ECOWILL-certified driving instructors.
Due to its benefits, Allegium Short Duration Training is especially indispensable for business drivers/ fleets:
- Significant and sustainable fuel savings
- Less wear and tear
- Less accidents
- Time-efficiency
- Individual customisation to participants` conditions
- Coaching method to encourage implementation of Eco-Driving
Essentials of Eco-Driving Short DurationTraining
- Individual 1:1 Eco-Driving Training (with driving safety inherent) for drivers of passenger cars/ vans (category B)
- Easy-to-learn key techniques of Eco-Driving with highest impact and acceptance
- Duration: some 60 mins.
- Practice relevant as being on-road under trainee´s every-day conditions
- Co-operational coaching didactics to foster acceptance of the contents: individual potentials identified by trainer but priorities set by trainee
- Intervention measures designed to foster intrinsic motivation of driver trained
- Credible demonstration of fuel saving effects of Eco-Driving techniques (comparing fuel consumption after vs. before training via on-board computer)
- Compliance with all relevant national legal requirements ensured
Success factors for a sustainable behavioural change to Eco-Driving style
- Timing and structure of Short Duration Training Concept
- Various modular units for individual customisation
- Coaching Didactics
- Trainer qualification requirements
Short Duration Training Concept
- Reception, cars with on-board computer, course planning, refreshments, brochures, certificates of participation, etc. must be organised.
- The training as teaser/ mind-opener concentrates on Eco-Driving core tips (additional tips are subject of follow-up or in-depth training).
- The coach is given maximum flexibility to react to individual skills/ frailties as well as likes/ dislikes of the participant.
- Fuel saving effects are visualised (after vs. before measurement) via on-board computer of training cars.
- Training route is a round course to be driven twice to compare results.
- A little time in reserve is scheduled in case obstructive external influences (delays, traffic jam, etc.) have to be absorbed.
Instruction Guidelines
- The concept is laid out to have the trainer accepted as expert and partner.
- The training concept is designed as edutainment thereby avoiding apprehension as „lesson for bad drivers “ or examination with driving school character.
- The training design leads every participant to personal learning optimum and motivation level.
- Intervention Principles:
- Overall principle „safety first“: No trade-offs safety vs. fuel economy are accepted.
- The participant mustn´t be overstrained.
- The personal optimum level is analysed by trainer after round 1.
- Feedback loop after the first round in „normal“ driving style confirms being a good driver and conveys improvement potential.
Short Duration Training Contents as specified in official handbook
Focus on 3 Eco-Driving core tips:
- Early gear-shifting at and driving with low rpm
- Anticipatory driving: continuous floating with minimum braking to exploit vehicle’s momentum; letting the car roll, when stopping is expected
- Keeping appropriate safety distance to extend own scope of action
